Paramachariar Indian Culture must be grateful to a few Individuals and if one goes by the History of people who have toiled every second of their life span to preserve it- I would place Adi Sankara,Swami Vivekananda and Kanchi Paramacharya-to single them out for their unique contribution . Basically Indians are God fearing ,as Swami Vivekananda, says but every one of us is so busy making money every second of our life time, we dont have the patience to read or understand what a few Saints like these three have done for humanity on the whole. While many anecdotes/articles have been written about Kanchi Mahaswami and when in 22nd century, none has the patience to read about another Godman , I have chosen to write on this subject , just for those one or two who care to know what it is worth!
A word must be said on Kanchi Paramachariar’s unique Regard for Bhagwan Ramana Maharshi, which is very much evident in the following narration …
Paul Brunton His journey ,chronicled in that book, reveals some unique features of our culture and he has listed Only One to be interviewd in his journey in the South called “Shankara of Kanchi”
He gets an appointment to visit Shankara (Mahaswami was hardly 45yrs at athat time!).
His Holiness doesnt see His way to receiving an European….
Finally Brunton somehow through one Prof.Venkatramani gets a Darshan and the interview goes like this:
Since there is an impending II World War looming at large: Brunton asks Paramacharya “There is much talk of Disarmament today, does that count”
Mahaswami:”if you scrap your battleships and let your cannons rust, that will not stop war.People will continue to fight ,even if they have to use sticks!”
“But what can be done to help matters”
“Nothing but spiritual understanding between one nation and another………”as long as inward transmission doesn’t come thro man will fight with whatever means another man”
This dialogue gives such an enlightenment to Brunton that he is keen on becoming a Yogi and starts asking : “I would like to meet someone who has high attainments in Yoga and can give some sort of proof of demonstration of them. There are many of your Holy men who can only give one more talk when they are asked for proof. Am I asking too much” Brunton asks.
“If you are seeking initiation into Real Yoga of the higher kind, then you are not seeking too much.Your earnestness will help you, while I can perceive the strength of your determination; but a Light is beginning to awaken within you which will guide you to what you want , without doubt”
The conversation goes on and on till Brunton again asks :” If I fail to find someone of that Yogic power, can you take me as a disciple” for which Mahaswami replies: “I am head of an institution. My activities demand most of my time and hence you must find a master who can devote his time to them”
“Can you direct me to such a master”
Yes. I know only of Two such. One of them lives in Benares , hidden away in a large House…I fear that he may refuse to admit a European”
“How about the other?”
“The other lives in interior south.. He is called Mahrishi”
Paul Brunton does not have time to visit Ramana Mahrishi and he continues to go to East and Calcutta and then after a long journey in Bombay he falls sick and again when he comes across another Saint of Ramakrishna Mutt, Chandi das, who predicts that he will not leave India come what may without seeking His Guru.
Paul Brunton throws his Ticket to sail back to London in the Gateway of India, and comes back to take again Mahaswami’s Darshan before he goes and dedicates himself with Ramana Mahrishi-
He bequeaths a million swiss franks for Ramana Ashram!
This story would reveal that Greatness lies where you accept that some one else is Greater too. Kanchi Mahaswami directs him to Ramana Maharishi and the beauty of the story is “How many of us has the humility to accept that the other man is greater too?”
