“உள்ளே போய் பார்த்துவிட்டு வரியா?”- மஹா பெரியவா
மஹா பெரியவா மஹாராஷ்டிராவில் சுற்றுப்பயணம் செய்துகொண்டிருந்த நேரம். ஒரு ஜமீன்தார் மஹானுக்கு சகலவிதமான உபசாரங்களையும் குறைவில்லாமல் செய்து கொடுத்துக்கொண்டிருந்தார். தனது ஊழியன் ஒருவனை பெரியவாளின் அருகிலேயே இருந்து பார்த்துக்கொள்ளும்படி பணித்தார். அந்த இளைஞன் பெயர் பவார் என்பதாகும். பணிவிடை என்றால் அப்படி ஒரு பணிவிடை.பெரியவாளுக்கு பரம திருப்தி. முகாமை முடித்துக்கொண்டு புறப்படும்போதுஜமீன்தாரிடம் கேட்டார்.
“இந்தப் பையனை நான் அழைத்துக்கொண்டு போகவா?”
ஜமீன்தாருக்கு மட்டற்ற மகிழ்ச்சி. தன ஊழியன் ஒருவன் மஹானுக்கு சேவை செய்வது என்பது எவ்வளவு பெரிய விஷயம்?
“தாராளமாக அழைத்துப் போங்கள், அவனது குடும்பத்தை நான் பார்த்துக்கொள்கிறேன், அவர்களுக்கு வேண்டிய எல்லா சௌகர்யங்களையும் நான் செய்து கொடுத்துவிடுகிறேன். அவர் குடும்பத்தைப் பற்றி கவலைப்படவே தேவை இல்லை அல்லவா?” என்றார் ஜமீன்தார். அன்றிலிருந்து அந்த வடநாட்டுஇளைஞன் பவார் மடத்து சிப்பந்திகளில் ஒருவனானான்.
அடுத்த முகாம் எங்கோ ஒரு வசதியில்லாத பிரதேசத்தில். இரவு நேரம், மடத்து ஊழியர்கள் யாவரும் இரவு உணவை தயாரித்து உண்டு முடித்துவிட்டனர். சாப்பாடு விஷயத்தில் மட்டும் யாருக்கும், எந்த விதத்திலும் குறை வைக்கக்கூடாது எனபது மஹாபெரியவாளின் கடுமையான கட்டளை.
எல்லோரும் சாப்பிட்டு முடித்தபின், உள்ளே வந்த மஹான், ஒவ்வருவரிடமும்“சாப்பிட்டாயிற்றா?” என்கிற கேள்வியை கேட்டு பதிலையும் பெற்றுக்கொண்டு இருந்தார். கடைசியாக வெளியே வந்தார். பவார் முகாமின் காவலாளியாகவெளியே நின்றுகொண்டு இருந்தான். அவனுக்குத் தமிழ் தெரியாதில்லையா?
“சாப்பாடு ஆயிற்றா?” என்று மஹான் சைகையினாலே கேட்க, “இல்லை” என்று சோகத்தோடு சைகை காட்டினான். மடத்து நிர்வாகியை அழைத்தார்.
“நம்மை நம்பி வந்திருக்கும் இவனுக்கு வேளா வேலைக்கு சோறு போடவேண்டும் என்கிற எண்ணம் உங்களுக்கு ஏன் இல்லாமல் போனது? அவனாக கேட்காவிட்டாலும் நீங்கள் சைகை மூலமாக அவனிடம் கேட்டிருக்கக் கூடாதா?நீங்கள் சாப்பிட்டுவிட்டு சாப்பாட்டுக்கடையை மூடிவிட்டீர்கள். இந்தப் பொட்டல் காட்டில் அவன் எங்கே போய் உணவைத் தேடுவான்…? என்று சரமாரியாக பொரிந்து தள்ளிவிட்டார். நிர்வாகி உடனே பவாருக்கு இரவு உணவை ஏற்பாடு செய்வதாக பெரியவாளிடம் சொல்லிவிட்டுப் போனார்.
சில நிமிடங்களில் முகாமுக்கு அருகே சைக்கிளில் வந்த ஒரு நபர், முகாமில் வெளிச்சம் தெரிவதைக் கவனித்து உள்ளே வந்துவிட்டார். அவர் கையில் ஒருசிறிய தூக்கு.
விசாரித்ததில் அருகில் இருக்கும் ஓரிடத்திற்கு உணவு கொண்டு போவதாகவும்,வழியில் அப்படியே மஹானைப் பார்க்க வந்ததாகவும் சொல்கிறார் அவர். காஞ்சி மஹான் அவரிடம் கேட்கிறார் “இதோ இருக்கும் நபருக்கு, ஏதாவது சாப்பிடக்கொடுக்க முடியுமா?” ஒரு ஊழியனுக்கு கருணை வள்ளல் புதியவனிடம் விண்ணப்பம் போடுகிறார்.
“இதோ இந்தத் தூக்கில் இரவு உணவு இருக்கிறது, சாப்பிடச் சொல்லுங்கள். நான் வேறு ஏற்பாடு செய்துகொள்கிறேன்” என்று தான் கொண்டு வந்த தூக்கைஅங்கேயே வைத்துவிட்டு போய்விடுகிறார். தூக்கைத் திறந்து பார்த்தால் வட இந்தியர் சாப்பிடும் சப்பாத்தி, சப்ஜி எல்லாம் அதில் சுடச்சுட இருக்கிறது. புன்னகையோடு பவாரை சாப்பிடச் சொல்கிறார் அந்த கருணை வள்ளல்.
தனக்காக யாரோ ஒரு வழிப்போக்கனிடம் உணவைப் பெற்றுத்தருகிறாரே இந்த மஹான் என்று நெகிழ்ந்து போனான் பவார்.
அதற்குப்பிறகு அந்த வழிப்போக்கன் முகாமின் பக்கமே வரவில்லை. தூக்கையும் கேட்டு வாங்கிக்கொண்டு போகவில்லை.
பவார் மடத்தில் நிரந்தர ஊழியன் ஆனபிறகு, அவனுக்கு மஹான்தான் எல்லாம். மஹான் தனது மேனாவிற்குள் சென்று உறங்கும்வரை, பவார்தான் உடனிருந்து கவனித்துக்கொள்வது வழக்கமாகிவிட்டது. பல வருடங்களுக்குப்பிறகு ஒரு தடவை பவாரின் குடும்பம் அவரைப்பார்க்க காஞ்சிக்கு வந்திருந்தார்கள். இரண்டொரு தினங்கள் மடத்தில் தங்கி காஞ்சி மஹானை ஆசைதீர தரிசனம்செய்தபிறகு, அவர்கள் திருப்பதிக்குச் சென்று வரவேண்டும் என்கிற ஆசை. பவார் இதை மஹானிடம் சொன்னபோது….
“தாராளமாக போய்வரட்டும்” என்று உத்தரவு கொடுத்தார். அவர்களுடன் தானும் போகவேண்டும் என்று பவாருக்கு ஆசை.
ஆனால் மஹானின் உத்தரவு வேண்டும். இவனுக்குக் கொடுக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும் பொறுப்புகளை யார் பார்த்துக்கொள்வார்கள்? ஒரு நாளில் குடும்பத்தோடு போய்விட்டு திரும்பி வந்துவிடலாம் என்கிற நப்பாசை. மனதில் தயங்கித் தயங்கி மஹானிடம் தனது கோரிக்கையை சமர்ப்பித்தான்.
“பாலாஜியைத்தானே பார்க்கணும், நீயும் போய்வா” என்று வாய் மொழியாக மஹான் சொல்லிவிடவே, பவாருக்கு அளவுகடந்த மகிழ்ச்சி. மஹானின் “மேனா”வை இரவில் இழுத்து மூடுவதும், காலையில் அதை முதலில் திறப்பதும் பவாரின் வேலைதான். அன்று காலை எல்லோரும் திருப்பதிக்குப் போக ஏற்பாடுசெய்யப்பட்டிருந்தது.
வழக்கம்போல் மஹானின் “மேனா” வில் திரைச்சீலையை விலக்கிவிட்டு காலையில் ஆற்றவேண்டிய சில கடைமைகளை செய்வதற்கு பவார் தன்னை தயார் செய்துகொண்டான்.
விடியற்காலை மஹானின் “மேனா” வின் திரையை விலக்கிப் பார்த்த பவார் அதிர்சியுடன் கூட பக்திப் பரவசமானான். உள்ளே சாக்ஷாத் பாலாஜியாக மஹான் அவன் கண்களுக்கு காட்சியளித்தார். தன கண்களையே அவனால்நம்பமுடியவில்லை.
“பாலாஜி இங்கேயே இருப்பது உனக்குத் தெரியாதா?” பவார் சாஷ்டாங்கமாக கீழே விழுந்து வணங்கி எழுந்தபோது மஹான் அவனைப் பார்த்து கேட்ட கேள்வி இது.
பேசமுடியாமல் இரண்டொரு நிமிடங்கள் கலவரத்தோடு நின்ற பவார் மெதுவாக மஹானை நோக்கி தன இரு கரங்களைக் கூப்பியவாறு “நான் திருப்பதிக்குஅவர்களுடன் போகவில்லை” என்றான். சர்வ வல்லமை படைத்த மஹான் இங்கேயே இருக்கும்போது, நான் ஏன் வேறு இடத்திற்கு கடவுளைத் தேடித் போகவேண்டும் என்று பவார் தனக்குதானே கேள்வியை எழுப்பிகொண்டான்,என்பது உண்மை.
இதே பவாருக்கு மஹான் வேறொரு தெய்வத்தின் தரிசனத்திற்கும் ஏற்பாடு செய்து கொடுத்தார். வட இந்திய முகாமின்போது நடந்த சம்பவம் இது. இடம் கிடைகாத பட்சத்தில் ஏதாவதொரு பகுதியில் நகரைவிட்டு சற்று தள்ளி மஹான் முகாமை அமைப்பது வழக்கம் என்று சொன்னார்கள். அப்படிப்பட்ட இடம்…
ஒரு நாள் மாலை யாரும் எதிர்பார்க்காத வண்ணம் மஹான் நடக்கஆரம்பித்துவிட்டார். பவார் மட்டும் அவருக்கு வழித்துணை. வேறு யாரும் உடன்வரக்கூடாது என்று உத்தரவு.
ஒற்றையடிப்பாதை வழியாக மழையின் அடிவாரத்தை அடைந்த மஹான், சற்றே மேலே ஏறத் தொடங்கினார். சற்று தூரம் போனவுடன் சுற்றிலும் இருந்த செடி கொடிகளை ஒதுக்கிவிட்டுப் பார்த்தபோது அந்த மலையில் ஒரு சிறிய குகைவாயில் தெரிந்தது. ஒருவர் தாராளமாகப் போய்வரலாம்.
“உள்ளே போய் பார்த்துவிட்டு வரியா?” என்று மஹான் பவாரிடம் கேட்க, தான் கையெடுத்துக் கும்பிட்டுவிட்டு… “எனக்கு பயமாக இருக்கிறது, நான் போகவில்லை” என்று சொல்லிவிடவே, மஹான் அவனைப் பார்த்து புன்னகை செய்தபின் குகைக்குள் நுழைந்தார்.
என்னவோ ஏதோ என்று கைகளைப் பிசைந்தவாறு பவார் குகைக்கு வெளியே நின்றுகொண்டு இருந்தான். முகம், மனம் கவலையினால் நிரம்பி வழிந்தது. சில நிமிடங்களுக்குப் பின் மஹான் சிரித்த முகத்துடன் வெளியே வந்தார்.
“இப்போ நீ போயிட்டு வரலாமே” என்றார். மஹாபெரியவாளே போய்விட்டு வந்தபின்னர் இனி தான் பயப்படுவது நன்றாக இருக்காது என்று பவார் குகைக்குள் போனான்.
உள்ளே போனபிறகு, இருண்ட குகையில் திடீரென வெளிச்சம். அவன் கண் எதிரே ஒரு மேடை. மேடையில் ஆஞ்சநேயர் விஸ்வரூபத்துடன், கை கூப்பியவாறு நிஷ்டையில் இருந்தார். பவாருக்கு கண்கள் கூசின. தன்னையே நம்பாதவனாக,வாயுபுத்திரனை வணங்கிவிட்டு, பரவசத்தோடு வெளியே வந்து சேர்ந்தான்.
வெளியே வந்தபின் எல்லாம் வல்ல சர்வேஸ்வரனான உம்மாச்சி தாத்தா, “பாத்துட்டியா?” என்ற கேள்வியை மட்டும் அவனிடம் கேட்டார். கை கூப்பியவாறு அவன் தலையை ஆட்டவே, இருவரும் அங்கிருந்து புறப்பட்டனர்.
இந்த பவார்தான் எவ்வளவு பாக்கியம் செய்தவன்.

Experiences with Maha Periyava: Maha Periyava as Lord Vaidyanatha

Periyava was camping in Madras Sanskrit college. He was suffering from chest pain. The ayurvedic medicines he took did not reduce the pain. The Manager was worried. Hesitatingly he told Periyava, “If you allow me, I will send word to Dr.Vaidyanathan in Alwarpet. I somehow feel that if he comes and sees, it will be better.”
Surprisingly the request was granted. Dr. Vaidyanathan came and checked the pulse after wrapping His hand with a silk cloth. It was normal. He checked the blood pressure. It was very high. “Periyava, BP is very high. You must take medicine immediately.”
“OK.OK. You come back and take the tests again after half an hour.”
The tests were taken after half an hour only to find that it had become too low. Periyava with a knowing smile said.”Half an hour ago, you tested and said that the BP was very high. Now you are saying it is very low. What happens when BP is high and what happens when BP is low?”
Dr.Vaidyanathan said “If BP is high, it will lead to hemorrhage and there is danger to life. If it is low, then people faint and fall down. That is also dangerous”.
Periyava asked like a child, “But, No such thing has happened to me. Neither hemorrhage nor fainting”.
The doctor was scratching his head. “That is very surprising to me! BP going up just like that and immediately coming down does not happen usually. I think …..Your body must be totally obeying your commands”.
This is what happens when you try to treat Lord Vaidyanatha himself……..

Experiences with Maha Periyava: Compassion of the Guru

A few decades ago, Maha Periyava was staying at Sri Kalahasti, a great pilgrim centre in the country. One night around 9 pm, he started walking fast in a particular direction, without informing anyone. His disciples who followed Him, were actually running. After walking a few miles, they came to a place covered with thick, thorny bushes. He asked the volunteers to remove the bushes, and that was done with great difficulty. To everyone’s surprise, they found a Panchamukha Siva Lingam there. What prompted the preceptor to go to that place on that night is still a mystery. Perhaps, Brahma prayed to have a darshan of the Guru and the Guru answered the prayers of his devotee! According to His direction, after sometime a temple was built there, which can be seen even today.

Sri Chembai Vaidhyanatha Bhagavathar, the revered Guru of the famous singer Yesudas, lost his voice due to throat cancer. He took a vow to Lord Guruvayurappan, stating that he would donate all his earning from his music concerts if he was blessed enough to regain his voice. He was cured and regained his voice and he adhered to the vow he made to the Lord. When he called on Paramacharya, he made a fervent appeal to bless him so that he would die only while he was performing at his home town. As he wished, the singer departed from this world when he was singing in his birth place. There is no parallel to the overwhelming compassion of the great Guru.

It was in the early 1960s when there was a war between India and China. The family members of an army officer in Triplicane did not get any communication for months, despite repeated requests to the Defence Department. They were unable to assure whether the concerned officer was alive. So the family presumed that the officer was dead. The wife was provided a place on the veranda and a date was fixed for performing the ceremony to tonsure her head.
Periyava visited Triplicane at that time. All the buildings wore took a festive look, decorated with mango leaves, plantain trees etc, except the army officer’s. His Holiness and His disciples, including my friend Sri A.T.Raman, walked through all the streets. When He came in front of the officer’s house, He stopped for a while and asked the inmates to send the Sumangali. It was a shock for them. However, the officer’s wife came out and prostrated at His feet. He gave her kumkum prasadam and asked her to adorn her forehead with it. He told that she need not worry and assured her that her husband would return safely within five days.
Maha Periyava’s utterances have never been made in vain.

A couple was in great distress as they could not get a suitable job for their well qualified son, in spite of strenuous efforts. They called on Periyava and expressed their anguish. His Holiness asked them to call on the General Manager of a State Bank and tell him that they were asked by Him to do so. Accordingly, they met him and gave the details. There was a photo of Periyava on his table, well decorated with fragrant flowers. The news was a very great surprise to the General Manager, as he had not met Periyava before. Immediately, he stood up and paid obeisance to Periyava with great reverence. How His Holiness could refer his name was not understandable to him. He immediately issued an appointment order to the candidate, giving inexpressible joy and happiness to the frustrated parents. Soon the General Manager went to Kanchipuram for the first time to have darshan of Paramacharya, and received His blessings.
